Step 1: Prepare the Patient

You will lie on your back on the operative table and the doctor will administer anesthesia so that you don’t feel pain during the surgery.

Step 2: Incision

Once you’re under anesthesia, the surgeon will make the appropriate incision.

Step 3: Removal of Affected Tissues/Nerves

They will remove the affected tissues or nerves to take pressure off the spinal cord or nerves.

Step 4: Closure

Once adequate decompression has been acheived, the surgeon will put back the muscles and close the incisions.

Recovery

Depending on the complexity of the surgery, you can leave the hospital about 1 to 4 days after having surgery. You’ll be discharged with pain medication. Avoid any strenuous activities for about 6 weeks.
